Emergency Financial Assistance
The Red Cross may provide access to financial assistance, either as an
interest-free loan or as a grant, for travel expenses when a personal or family
crisis arises which requires the presence of the service member or his or her
family. Access to financial assistance may also be provided when there is a
demonstrated need for funds for emergency travel, burial assistance or urgent
health and welfare needs such as food and shelter. In 1999 the American Red
Cross, in partnership with the military aid societies, helped 12,781 military
families obtain more than $9.3 million in assistance.
For emergency financial assistance, active duty military and their family
members in the United States can call the Armed Forces Emergency Service Center
seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The center's toll-free
telephone number is available to service members and their families through
base/installation operators and from local on-base Red Cross stations. Members
of the National Guard and Reserves and retirees can get help through their local
Red Cross chapters.
In overseas deployment areas, American Red Cross mobile staff working directly
with America's military provide access to emergency financial assistance
services. On overseas military installations, military personnel can get help
through on-base Red Cross stations.
