Important: NOT ALL
shelters will be opened at the same time, stay tuned to your local media for
shelter announcements!
Evacuation Information: Those who need to evacuate will know through
both local media and your local police department. Those generally needing to
evacuate, reside in mobile homes, barrier islands and areas that have a recent
history of flooding.
Who
should go to Red Cross Shelters: Going to a shelter should be your last
choice. If you must evacuate, please consider places that may offer you more
comfort and privacy. You may choose to make arrangements with friends and
relatives who live in a safe area. Making an advanced reservation with a
hotel/motel out of the area is also a good choice. Remember to leave as soon as
possible after your notification to avoid traffic!
Shelter Information: If you come to a shelter, remember to bring the
following: change of clothes, toilet articles, bedding, pillows, prescription
medication, any special dietary food, cards, family board games, battery powered
radio and a flash light. Shelters will have a team of volunteers including a
nurse to register you and look after your well being. Foods served will be
simple and conditions may be very crowded. Remember a shelter is not designed
for comfort, it is designed to save your life!
Special Needs Shelter: For those who are requiring special nursing
care, are on oxygen or any other life support systems, and need special,
individual, shelter care, you will need to contact your local Emergency
Management Office.
Pets: Pets are not allowed in Red Cross shelters. For more information
on care for pets during disasters please contact your local Animal Control
Division.
Approved Hurricane Shelter Locations:
To know which locations are open, listen to announcements over your local
television or radio station! For more information on locations of shelters..
