Red Cross Responds to powerful earthquake and tsunamis in South Asia

Services provided by the American Red Cross worldwide have a strong impact on our own American communities. Many here in North Central Florida have origins in other countries and keep close ties with their families who still live in those countries. When these families are unexpectedly torn apart by war, disaster or political unrest, the American Red Cross helps to re-establish communication between family members when no other communication is possible. International Social Services of the Red Cross include:

  • Exchanging family messages to war-torn or disaster ravaged countries

  • International disaster relief inquiries

  • Health and welfare inquiries

  • Providing information and referral services

  • Providing Holocaust tracing

  • School chest program that provides school supplies to under-privilege children throughout the world.

  • Presenting the Law of War and International Humanitarian Law

Services are free to community members. If you would like more information about International Services locally, please call 352-376-4669

Measles

measles Each year, a disease barely remembered by most Americans kills nearly one million children, a half million of those in Africa alone.

This fact makes measles the single leading cause of vaccine-preventable death among children in Africa - more than AIDS, more than tuberculosis, and more than malnutrition. In a place where health conditions are extremely poor, living conditions are more than difficult, and access to health care is minimal, measles can be easily prevented with a simple vaccination.

The Measles Initiative is a long-term commitment to control measles deaths in Africa by vaccinating 200 million children, preventing 1.2 million deaths over five years. For more information please visit the Measles Initiative website.
