Emergency Services

Disaster Services

When natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes strike, volunteers are swiftly mobilized. They provide direct services at shelters and feeding stations, respond to health care needs, verify disaster-caused needs of individuals and families, and enable disaster victims to resume living independently by providing a means for them to pay for emergency home repairs, clothing and other essential needs. Volunteers also serve on committees to develop disaster plans and recruit community resources. Disaster Action Team (DAT) members immediately respond to fires. These teams are trained to assist individuals and families with housing, clothing and other essential items.

International Services

The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which symbolizes the unity of all Red Cross work carried out by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), more than 170 Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies around the world and the Magen David Adom in Israel.

American Red Cross International Services has six program priorities -- emergency response, Primary health care, food security, tracing and Red Cross messages, organizational development and dissemination of international humanitarian law. Tampa Bay Chapter volunteer opportunities include:

  • tracing, message reunion services between people in the US and their relatives around the world, and
  • disseminating information to the public and educate its military about international humanitarian law. Trained instructors provide education about the Geneva Conventions, making presentations and teaching courses to the public and to Red Cross paid and volunteer staff.

Health and Safety Services

  • Teaching Courses
The American Red Cross is saving lives every day. How? By teaching first aid, CPR, swimming, and other health and safety skills to our community in schools, workplaces, community centers and Red Cross offices. You can help by becoming a volunteer instructor with the world’s expert in safety education! We can provide you with rewarding experiences, whatever your schedule. And, if you need training, we’ll provide it.
  • Marketing and Special Events
Volunteers also are needed to assist with marketing and special events, such as CPR Saturday. By distributing brochures and other items at health fairs, tradeshows, and other events, volunteers help the public by providing “lifesaving” information. This assignment is perfect for volunteers who are employed during the day because some of these events are held in the evenings and on weekends.

Red Cross Office

Volunteers also assist with special events, health fairs, public affairs, and provide clerical assistance.

  • General Office
Volunteers assist in a clerical capacity in all departments of the Chapter and Branch offices. Duties may include data entry, typing, filing, switchboard, record-keeping and copying. Office hours are weekdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

  • Public Affairs/Marketing
Volunteers make presentations about Red Cross programs and services, assist in researching information and writing articles for local media outlets. Other duties include assisting with data entry, invitations and bulk mailings.
